Non-Denominational
The word "denomination" implies division. According to Webster's Dictionary, a denomination is "a sect." Webster further defines a sect as "a party dissenting from an established or parent church." The Restoration Movement started when believers from several denominations attempted to find a basis for unity in the instructions left for the Church by our Lord and His apostles. In contrast, denominations create three barriers to Christian Unity:
- A name that separates them from the rest of the body of Christ.
- Man made creeds given as the condition of salvation or fellowship.
- An earthly hierarchy that decides what should be taught in the local church.
Although our fellowship includes thousands of churches throughout the world, a vast number of para-church organizations, Bible colleges, seminaries, nursing homes, camps, missions, publishing companies as well as state and national convention, our churches are independently governed. Our members attend conventions for inspiration-not to make any policy decision.
Our churches are conservative in their beliefs and share many beliefs in common; however, we have no creeds. The only conditions we require for membership are those found in the New Testament: a living faith in Jesus Christ that leads to repentance, confession of Jesus as Lord, and baptism.
Further, the churches in our movement choose to identify themselves with the rest of those believing in Christ by using Biblical names such as Disciple, Church of Christ, or Christian. In short, Haileyville Christian Church is a small part of the body of Christ. We aspire to be Christians Only but not the only Christians. We strive to be a first century church for the twenty first century.
